Wii Fit Challenge- #1

Ok everyone I did it again, I got another toy.  I had heard about these gaming systems called Wii made by Nintendo.  We all remember our super Mario brothers and donkey Kong, I think Nintendo made them.  About two weeks ago the assisted living community that I work at bought a Wii for the residents to use.  I found myself playing bowling with them for hours.  I had heard awhile ago about a new work out game called Wii Fit that was coming out.  So I purchased a Wii, had it shipped to me.  As the Wii was shipping I did research on-line and read that Wii Fit had actually come out that day, it was Wednesday.  I called Best Buy to see if they had it in stock and they said that they did.  I went to Best Buy and found the Wii Fit and right next to it was a Wii.  I thought they would be sold out which is why I ordered it on-line.  I wish I had done more concrete research but oh well!

Anyway, I’m sitting at home on Wednesday with my Wii Fit box but no Wii to play it.  I knew the next day was going to kill me.  I checked the tracking of my package as it made it to my office door, it needed a signature so I had it sent to work.  The DHL man came in and asked for my signature, it was only 11am.  I had four more hours of work to go before I could sneak out of there and go home to play.  I ended my last hour at work that day playing Wii Bowling with the residents.  Wii in hand I went home, came up to my apartment and set it up.

Now it should be stated that I am the least competitive person that I know.  I actually avoid games because I don’t like competing with people.  It goes back to childhood issues I think but I digress.  Anyway, I set the Wii up and I haven’t been able to put it down.  There are plenty of other things that I should be doing, like writing, reading, cleaning my apartment but I just can’t help myself.

If you’d like to learn more about Wii Fit check this article on Gamespot out.  So I did some more research to see if anyone has lost any weight with this thing.  After reading this guys experience with Wii Fit I decided I should give myself my own challenge.  So here is what I’m going to do.  I’m going to do Wii Fit everyday for at least 30 minutes.  I’ll do a combination of yoga, strength training, aerobics and balance exercises.  I’ll keep a running tally of what I’ve done each day and at some point during the week I’ll do a check in here on the website.  Wii Fit tells you your BMI, your weight (although it’s on a weird scale), and your Wii Fit age, which changes depending on your balancing skills.  You are supposed to do a body test so I’ll started with yesterday’s data.  I’m not going to report on actual weight just what it says I’ve lost or gained.  I’m going to try to curve my eating but most likely it will stay the same.  We’ll start with yesterday’s data.

May 24, 2008

BMI- 32.11

Wii Fit Age- 39

Time- 54 minutes

I went a little overboard this day doing lots of yoga poses.  I found that my balance, especially when having to stand on one leg was horrible.  I’m excited that I’ll have the opportunity to improve balance.  I also played boxing in Wii Sports and fell in love with it.  It’s invigorating to knock someone out in a game.  I found it strangely therapeutic.  I discovered that I can’t do a push up or a side plank but that will happen in time.  I did the running in place exercises and didn’t have a problem.

  1. I have a Wii. We should exchange Mii’s.
I thought about the Wii Fit, but do not want it to interfere with my training for the Chicago Marathon, so it may be a few weeks (or months) before I get one. Training for Chicago will absorb most of my available exercise and other free time.
I have even got the mountain bike and am getting it ready for cross-training.
I’ll be watching for how you like it!

  2. I hope you had a great holiday.
I ran my off-set smoker on Saturday. I smoked 4 1/2 racks of ribs and a 6.5 pound flat brisket. That sets up my kitchen for six additional BBQ meals at some future time in addition to the 2 I served this weekend!
Did I tell you that I ran the Colorado Colfax Half-Marathon on Sunday May 18th? Set a new PR of 2:20:40.5. I’m still an old turtle, but a slightly faster one now!
I also ran 3.36 miles that same Saturday with a long run of 10.24 on Sunday morning. I took Monday off from running and did a Jeep trail with friends!

I used a Memphis style rub. Simple really – Paprika, garlic powder, sea salt, black pepper and just enough cayenne pepper to give it a kick. Seals in the juices. This style of smoked meat is usually served without sauce. I prefer it that way!

  4. Wow, Ron! I am impressed! You should definitely podcast about this.
I’ll be cheering for Charlie in Chicago.
Did you know that I have moved? Yep — to Olive Branch, Mississippi.
